The Crafting of an Integral Knife

Follow along as we chronicle the making of Goliath II, a custom investment quality art knife currently for sale,  from raw bar to finished piece.

Goliath II is the top project in my 37 years of full time knife making. This is It. From a 41 pound bar of CPM154cm to its finished weight of 6 pounds and 3 ounces, this Museum grade masterpiece knocks it out of the ballpark.

Jere Davidson imparted 510 hours into the engraving, cutting out and hammering in 2.5 ounces of 24K pure gold and lastly setting 132 diamonds into the Gold.

Milling and Cutting the Metal Stock

First we have the raw bar that was created by Niagara Specialty Metals just for this project which goes through several stages of milling in our knifemaking shop in Goshen Virginia.

A large quantity of chips are created as the metal stock is shaped into an integral knife. After all of the milling the knife is sawed apart.

Shaping the Knife and Engraving

Here the knife is 100% rough shaped. This is after all of the shaping has been completed and it is ready for engraving. Meet Master Engraver Jere Davidson who did all of the Art work on this amazing piece as it is now ready for Heat Treating.

Hardening the Knife

This shows Goliath all staged up and ready for Hardening at Peters Heat Treating in Meadville, PA. Master Heat Treater Bradley Stallsmith oversaw this process from start to finish. Next Bradley is closing the door on the one million dollar Atmospheric Control furnace.

Tempering the Knife

After hardening th knife is placed in a tempering oven for its first temper. Bradley is placing the knife into the Cryo Box that will take it to -300 below zero for 2 hours. Brad removing Goliath from the deep freeze.

Finishing the Knife

Brad holding Goliath that is 100% frozen. After Cryo and 2nd Temper, Goliath is now ready to be cleaned and polished then sent back to Jere where he will install all 132 diamonds into the 2.5 ounces of 24K gold.

Presenting Goliath II
